How often should you really shower? What experts want you to know
There is no single shower schedule that is right for everyone. How often you need to shower depends on your activity level, climate, skin type, job, age, and personal comfort.
General guidance
- Most people: Showering every day or every other day is reasonable.
- People who sweat a lot, exercise frequently, work in dirty environments, or live in hot/humid climates: A daily shower may be helpful.
- People with dry or sensitive skin, or older adults with less oily skin: Showering less often may prevent dryness and irritation.
Why showering too often can be a problem
Frequent long, hot showers can:
- Remove natural oils that protect the skin
- Cause dryness, itching, or irritation
- Worsen some skin conditions
How to shower in a skin-friendly way
- Use warm rather than very hot water.
- Keep showers relatively short (often around 5–10 minutes is enough).
- Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers if your skin is sensitive.
- Moisturize after bathing if your skin feels dry.
- Focus washing on areas that usually need it most: armpits, groin, feet, and areas with sweat or dirt.
For older adults
Many older people benefit from:
- Shorter showers or sponge baths as needed
- Moisturizing regularly because skin becomes thinner and drier with age
- Adjusting bathing frequency based on comfort, mobility, and skin health
The “right” amount is the one that keeps you clean, comfortable, and protects your skin barrier. If you have eczema, very dry skin, or another skin condition, your ideal routine may be different.
