Claims like “clean 15 kilograms of waste from your colon in one night” are not medically accurate.
The colon does not normally store 15 kg (about 33 pounds) of waste, and there is no safe overnight drink or cleanse that removes that amount. Your digestive system is constantly moving waste through the intestines and eliminating it naturally.
What about “colon cleanses”?
There is no good scientific evidence that colon cleanses or “detox” drinks:
- Remove years of built-up waste
- Flush toxins from a healthy colon
- Improve general health in most people
Some cleanses can actually cause:
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Nausea and abdominal cramps
- In rare cases, injury to the colon
If you’re constipated
Evidence-based ways to help include:
- Eating more fiber (fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains)
- Drinking enough water
- Getting regular physical activity
- Using an over-the-counter laxative if appropriate and following the instructions
When to seek medical care
See a healthcare professional if you have:
- Constipation lasting more than 2–3 weeks
- Blood in your stool
- Severe abdominal pain
- Persistent vomiting
- Unexplained weight loss
- A sudden change in bowel habits, especially if you’re over 50
Your colon is designed to clean itself through normal digestion and bowel movements. If you’re concerned about constipation or bowel health, treating the underlying cause is much more effective than trying an overnight “cleanse.”
