Using a dishwasher tablet to clean an oven is a popular household tip, and it can help loosen baked-on grease, but it’s not a miracle solution and should be used carefully to avoid damaging the oven.
How to use a dishwasher tablet safely
You’ll need:
- 1 dishwasher tablet
- Warm water
- Rubber gloves
- A soft sponge or microfiber cloth
Steps:
- Make sure the oven is turned off and completely cool.
- Wet the dishwasher tablet with warm water. It should be damp, not falling apart.
- Gently rub greasy or burnt areas with the tablet, using light pressure.
- Let the residue sit for 10–15 minutes to help soften stubborn grime.
- Wipe the surface with a damp cloth until all cleaner residue is removed.
- Dry with a clean towel.
Important precautions
- Don’t use this method on self-cleaning oven interiors unless the manufacturer says it’s safe.
- Avoid scrubbing glass, enamel, or coated surfaces aggressively, as dishwasher tablets are mildly abrasive and may scratch or dull some finishes.
- Wear gloves, as dishwasher detergents can irritate skin.
- Never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach, ammonia, or other cleaning products.
For very stubborn grease
A commercial oven cleaner designed for your oven type is often more effective than a dishwasher tablet. For lighter grease, a paste of baking soda and water, followed by a wipe with a damp cloth, is another commonly used option.
The dishwasher tablet trick can be useful for some ovens, but it usually won’t remove all burnt-on grease in a single pass, especially if the buildup is thick or has accumulated over a long time.
