Here’s how to have geraniums full of flowers: you have to water them like this to always have them thriving

Posted on July 12, 2026 by Admin

To keep geraniums (pelargoniums) full of flowers, watering is less about giving them lots of water and more about watering correctly:

  • Water deeply, then let the soil partly dry out. Water until it drains from the bottom of the pot, then wait until the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil feels dry before watering again.
  • Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet. Overwatering is one of the most common reasons geraniums stop flowering or develop yellow leaves.
  • Water at the base of the plant, not over the leaves and flowers, to reduce the risk of fungal problems.
  • Water more often in hot, sunny weather and less during cool or rainy periods.
  • Use pots with drainage holes and a light, well-draining potting mix.
  • For abundant blooms, combine proper watering with regular deadheading (removing faded flowers) and a flowering fertilizer during the growing season.

A good rule: geraniums prefer being slightly thirsty rather than sitting in soggy soil. A brief dry spell often encourages more blooms.
