Headlines like “A telltale sign in your fingernails that may predict your life expectancy” are usually exaggerated. No single fingernail feature can reliably predict how long someone will live.
That said, fingernails can sometimes provide clues about underlying health conditions. Examples include:
- Clubbing (rounded, enlarged fingertips with curved nails): Can be associated with chronic lung disease, certain heart conditions, liver disease, or inflammatory bowel disease.
- Spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia): May be linked to iron deficiency anemia.
- Pitting: Small dents in the nail surface can occur with psoriasis or other skin conditions.
- Yellow, thickened nails: Often caused by a fungal infection, but occasionally associated with other medical conditions.
- Dark streaks: A new dark line under a nail should be evaluated, as it can rarely be a sign of melanoma.
- White nails or changes in nail color: Can sometimes be associated with liver disease, kidney disease, or low protein levels, though there are many harmless causes too.
One nail feature that has received attention is nail growth rate. Nails tend to grow more slowly with age and certain illnesses, but this is not a validated way to predict an individual’s life expectancy. Slower nail growth can simply reflect aging, nutrition, circulation, or other factors.
When to see a healthcare professional
Consider getting a nail change evaluated if it:
- Appears suddenly and persists.
- Affects one nail without an obvious injury.
- Is accompanied by pain, swelling, or infection.
- Includes a new dark streak, especially if it widens or extends into the surrounding skin.
