Using a dishwasher tablet to clean an oven is a popular cleaning hack, and it can help loosen grease — but it is not a guaranteed “like new” solution and should be used carefully.
How the dishwasher tablet method works
You’ll need:
- 1 dishwasher tablet (preferably not a gel capsule that can leak)
- A bowl of hot water
- Rubber gloves
- A microfiber cloth or sponge
Steps:
- Make sure the oven is cool and remove racks and trays.
- Place the dishwasher tablet in a bowl and pour in hot water.
- Let it soften/dissolve for a few minutes.
- Wearing gloves, use the solution to wipe greasy areas.
- Let stubborn spots sit for a while, then wipe with clean water.
Important precautions:
- Dishwasher tablets are designed for dishes, not necessarily oven interiors, so avoid heavy use or leaving residue behind.
- Rinse thoroughly after cleaning so no detergent remains where food is cooked.
- Avoid using this method on self-cleaning oven coatings or special surfaces unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
- Never mix dishwasher detergent with other cleaners like bleach or ammonia.
For very baked-on oven grease, a dedicated oven cleaner or a baking soda paste left to sit overnight is often more effective and safer for many oven surfaces. The key is usually softening the grime first, not aggressive scrubbing.
