How to Make Your Mother-in-Law’s Tongue Bloom and Perfume Your Entire Home

Posted on July 14, 2026 by Admin

The mother-in-law’s tongue (also called Dracaena trifasciata, formerly known as Sansevieria trifasciata) is prized for its hardy foliage. It can bloom, but flowering is relatively uncommon indoors. When it does, it produces clusters of small, white to greenish flowers that are often fragrant, especially in the evening.

To encourage flowering:

  • Provide bright light. Bright, indirect light is ideal, though the plant can tolerate some direct morning sun.
  • Avoid overwatering. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common cause of poor growth.
  • Use well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix works well.
  • Keep it slightly root-bound. Snake plants sometimes bloom when they’re a bit crowded in their pots.
  • Fertilize sparingly. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), following the label directions.
  • Maintain warm temperatures. They grow best between about 18–29°C (65–85°F) and should be protected from frost.

Keep in mind that there is no guaranteed trick that will make a snake plant flower. Blooming depends on factors such as the plant’s age, maturity, growing conditions, and genetics. Even healthy plants may go years without producing flowers.

If your snake plant does bloom, enjoy the fragrance—but don’t be concerned if it never does. The plant is primarily grown for its attractive, durable leaves rather than its flowers.
