The idea of pouring white vinegar into a toilet tank overnight is a popular cleaning hack. The results can be helpful, but they are sometimes exaggerated online.
What may happen after leaving vinegar in the toilet tank

What vinegar probably will not do
- It will not “restore” an old toilet tank to brand-new condition.
- It will not remove all stains, especially deep rust or heavy mineral buildup.
- It is not a guaranteed fix for leaks, weak flushing, or worn-out parts.
How to use vinegar safely
- Turn off the toilet’s water supply.
- Flush to lower the water level in the tank (optional).

Important caution
Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach or bleach-containing cleaners. Combining acids and bleach can create dangerous chlorine gas.
If your toilet is 15 years old, cleaning may help, but parts such as the flapper valve, fill valve, and seals may also simply be worn and may need replacement for better performance.
