How to Get Rid of Inner Ear Crystals and Reduce Vertigo

A common cause of brief episodes of vertigo is Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals (called otoconia) become dislodged and move into one of the inner ear’s balance canals. This can cause a sudden spinning sensation when you change the position of your head.

The goal of treatment is not to dissolve the crystals, but to move them back to where they belong.

1. Canalith repositioning maneuvers

The most effective treatment for BPPV is a series of head and body movements performed to guide the crystals out of the affected canal.

Common maneuvers include:

  • Epley maneuver
  • Semont maneuver

A healthcare professional can determine which ear and canal are affected and perform or teach the correct maneuver.

2. Vestibular rehabilitation exercises

If dizziness persists, a physical therapist trained in vestibular rehabilitation may recommend exercises to help your brain adapt and improve balance.

3. Move carefully

Until symptoms improve:

  • Rise slowly from bed.
  • Avoid sudden head movements.
  • Use handrails or support if you feel unsteady.

4. Stay hydrated and rest

Although dehydration does not cause BPPV, staying well hydrated and getting enough rest may help you feel better if you’re experiencing dizziness.

What usually doesn’t help

  • There is no evidence that special diets, supplements, or home remedies can remove inner ear crystals.
  • Medications for dizziness may temporarily reduce symptoms but do not reposition the crystals.

When to seek urgent medical care

Vertigo is not always caused by BPPV. Get emergency medical attention if dizziness is accompanied by:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Trouble speaking
  • Double vision
  • Severe headache unlike previous headaches
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting
  • Difficulty walking that is new or severe

These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition, such as a stroke.

Bottom line

For BPPV, the most effective treatment is a canalith repositioning maneuver performed correctly. If your vertigo lasts for hours, is constant, or comes with hearing loss, severe headache, or neurological symptoms, you should be evaluated by a healthcare professional because another condition may be causing your dizziness.
