Baking Soda on the Face: Benefits, Risks, and How to Use It Safely

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a common household ingredient, but its use in skincare is controversial. While some people use it as a DIY exfoliant, there is little scientific evidence that it improves acne, fades dark spots, or reduces wrinkles, and it may irritate the skin.

Possible Benefits

When used sparingly and on skin that tolerates it, baking soda may:

  • Gently exfoliate dead skin cells
  • Leave the skin feeling smoother temporarily
  • Help remove excess oil from the skin’s surface

However, these effects are temporary and do not treat underlying skin conditions.

Risks to Consider

Baking soda has a high (alkaline) pH, while healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic. Frequent use may:

  • Disrupt the skin’s protective barrier
  • Cause dryness and flaking
  • Lead to redness, burning, or irritation
  • Worsen eczema, rosacea, or sensitive skin
  • Increase sensitivity to other skincare products

Avoid applying baking soda:

  • Around the eyes
  • On broken, sunburned, or irritated skin
  • If you have very sensitive skin or active eczema

How to Use It More Safely

If you choose to try it:

  1. Mix a small amount of baking soda with enough water to form a thin paste.
  2. Apply gently for no more than 30–60 seconds.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  4. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer afterward.
  5. Use no more than once every 1–2 weeks.

Before using it on your face, perform a patch test by applying a small amount to your inner forearm and waiting 24 hours to check for irritation.

4 Gentle DIY Alternatives

These options are generally gentler than baking soda, though patch testing is still recommended.

1. Oatmeal & Yogurt Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon finely ground oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon plain yogurt

Apply for 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

2. Honey Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon plain honey

Apply a thin layer for 10–15 minutes, then rinse.

Note: Do not use if you have a known allergy to honey or bee products.

3. Aloe Vera Gel

Apply pure aloe vera gel to clean skin and leave it on according to the product directions. It may help soothe irritated skin.

4. Plain Yogurt Mask

Apply a thin layer of plain, unsweetened yogurt for 5–10 minutes, then rinse gently.

Better-Supported Options for Common Skin Concerns

  • For acne: Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (used as directed)
  • For dark spots: Daily sunscreen, vitamin C, niacinamide, or retinoids
  • For fine lines: Sunscreen, retinoids, and regular moisturizing

The Bottom Line

Baking soda is not a proven treatment for acne, wrinkles, or dark spots, and regular use can damage the skin barrier. If you decide to use it, do so rarely, gently, and stop immediately if irritation develops. For long-term skin health, evidence-based skincare products and daily sun protection are safer and more effective choices.
