9 Signs of Diabetes That May Appear at Night

Some symptoms of diabetes can become more noticeable at night because changes in blood sugar can affect sleep, thirst, and urination patterns. These signs do not prove someone has diabetes, but they may be reasons to get blood sugar checked.

  1. Frequent nighttime urination
    • High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove extra glucose through urine, leading to more trips to the bathroom.
  2. Excessive thirst at night
    • Fluid loss from frequent urination can cause increased thirst, including waking up needing water.
  3. Dry mouth
    • Dehydration from increased urination or reduced saliva production during sleep can contribute to a dry mouth.
  4. Night sweats
    • Blood sugar changes, especially episodes of low blood sugar in people taking diabetes medications, can sometimes cause sweating during sleep.
  5. Trouble sleeping
    • Fluctuating blood sugar levels, discomfort, or frequent bathroom trips may interfere with sleep.
  6. Tingling or numbness in the feet
    • Nerve damage related to diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) can cause burning, tingling, or pain that may be more noticeable at night.
  7. Increased hunger after waking
    • Some people experience unusual hunger due to blood sugar regulation problems.
  8. Slow-healing cuts or skin problems
    • Diabetes can affect circulation and the immune system, which may contribute to slower healing.
  9. Fatigue despite getting enough sleep
    • Poor glucose control can leave the body without efficient energy use, causing tiredness.

When to consider a check-up

If you have several of these symptoms—especially increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurry vision, or persistent fatigue—consider getting a blood glucose test from a healthcare professional.

A simple blood test such as fasting blood glucose or HbA1c can help determine whether blood sugar levels are in the normal range.
