Itchy Scalp: Possible Causes (According to Dermatology)

An itchy scalp is common and can happen for many reasons—from simple dryness to skin conditions that need treatment. Here are some of the most common causes:

1. Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis)

  • One of the most frequent causes of scalp itching.
  • Often comes with white or yellowish flakes, oiliness, redness, or irritation.
  • Can be related to an overgrowth of a normal skin yeast called Malassezia.

2. Dry scalp

  • A dry scalp may feel tight, itchy, and flaky.
  • It can be caused by cold weather, frequent washing, harsh shampoos, or hot water.

3. Product irritation or allergy

  • Shampoos, hair dyes, fragrances, gels, and styling products can trigger irritation or allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Itching may occur with redness, burning, or a rash.

4. Psoriasis of the scalp

  • A chronic inflammatory skin condition that can cause thick, silvery scales and itchy patches.
  • It may extend beyond the hairline.

5. Head lice

  • Lice bites can cause intense itching, especially around the ears and back of the neck.
  • Small eggs (nits) may be attached to hair strands.

6. Fungal infections (such as scalp ringworm)

  • More common in children but can affect adults.
  • May cause itching, scaling, broken hairs, or patches of hair loss.

7. Eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions

  • These can cause itching, redness, and sensitivity of the scalp.

8. Stress and nerve-related causes

  • Stress can worsen itching from existing skin conditions.
  • In some cases, nerve irritation can create itching sensations without a visible rash.

When to see a dermatologist:

Seek medical advice if you have:

  • Persistent itching that does not improve
  • Pain, swelling, sores, or oozing
  • Significant hair loss
  • Thick plaques or severe scaling
  • Signs of infection

A dermatologist can examine the scalp and recommend the right treatment, which may include medicated shampoos, topical treatments, or other therapies depending on the cause.
