Can Your Body Warn You a Month Before a Heart Attack?

Some people experience symptoms in the days or weeks before a heart attack, while others have no warning signs at all. These symptoms are not specific to heart attacks and can have many other causes, but they should not be ignored—especially if they are new, worsening, or occur during physical activity.

Possible warning signs include:

1. Chest discomfort

  • Pressure, tightness, squeezing, or pain in the center or left side of the chest.
  • It may come and go or occur with exertion.

2. Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty breathing during activity or even at rest can sometimes be a warning sign.

3. Unusual fatigue

  • Feeling much more tired than usual, particularly if it is unexplained and persistent.
  • This symptom is reported more often by women, but it can occur in anyone.

4. Pain that spreads

  • Discomfort may radiate to the arm, shoulder, neck, jaw, or back.

5. Nausea, indigestion, or cold sweats

  • Some people, especially women, may have these symptoms instead of classic chest pain.

6. Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Feeling faint or suddenly dizzy, especially with other symptoms, may indicate a heart problem.

Seek emergency care immediately if you have:

  • Chest pain or pressure lasting more than a few minutes or that comes back.
  • Chest discomfort with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck, or back.
  • Sudden collapse or loss of consciousness.

These symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention. Do not try to drive yourself if symptoms are severe—call your local emergency services.

Important

These symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than a heart attack, such as acid reflux, anxiety, or muscle strain. However, because heart attacks can be life-threatening, new or concerning symptoms should always be evaluated promptly rather than dismissed. Early treatment greatly improves outcomes.
