10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain breaks. Fast treatment can save brain function and improve outcomes, so recognizing warning signs quickly is important.

A helpful way to remember common stroke symptoms is BE FAST:

1. Balance problems

  • Sudden dizziness, loss of coordination, trouble walking, or unexplained falls.

2. Eye or vision changes

  • Sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision in one or both eyes.

3. Face drooping

  • One side of the face may feel weak or numb.
  • Ask the person to smile—one side may not move normally.

4. Arm weakness

  • Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm (or leg), especially on one side of the body.
  • Ask the person to raise both arms—one may drift downward.

5. Speech difficulty

  • Slurred speech, trouble finding words, or difficulty understanding others.

6. Sudden severe headache

  • A sudden, intense headache that is unusual for the person may be a warning sign, especially if it occurs with other symptoms.

7. Numbness or tingling

  • Sudden loss of feeling or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side.

8. Confusion

  • Sudden trouble understanding what is happening or difficulty thinking clearly.

9. Trouble swallowing

  • Difficulty swallowing can occur if certain areas of the brain are affected.

10. Sudden loss of coordination

  • Problems with movement, balance, or performing normal tasks.

What to do if you suspect a stroke:

  • Call emergency services immediately.
  • Note the time symptoms started (or the last time the person was known to be well).
  • Do not wait to see if symptoms improve.
  • Do not give food, drink, or medication unless advised by medical professionals.

Remember:

Stroke symptoms can appear suddenly, but they can also come and go (such as in a transient ischemic attack, or “mini-stroke”). Even if symptoms disappear, urgent medical evaluation is still needed because it may be a warning sign of a future stroke.
