10 Common Side Effects of Metoprolol
Metoprolol is a beta-blocker used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), certain heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, and to reduce the risk of future heart problems after a heart attack. Most people tolerate it well, but side effects can occur.
1. Fatigue
- Feeling unusually tired or having less energy is one of the most common side effects, especially when starting the medication.
2. Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Because metoprolol lowers blood pressure and slows the heart rate, some people feel dizzy, particularly when standing up quickly.
3. Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- A slower pulse is expected, but if it becomes too slow and causes symptoms, it should be evaluated.
4. Cold hands and feet
- Some people notice colder fingers or toes due to reduced blood flow to the extremities.
5. Low blood pressure
- Symptoms can include faintness, blurred vision, or weakness.
6. Digestive problems
- Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach discomfort may occur.
7. Sleep changes
- Some people report insomnia or vivid dreams.
8. Reduced exercise tolerance
- Since metoprolol limits how much your heart rate increases during exercise, physical activity may feel more difficult.
9. Mood changes
- A small number of people experience low mood or depression, although the link is not always clear.
10. Shortness of breath or wheezing
- This is uncommon but can occur, particularly in people with asthma or certain other lung conditions.
When to seek medical advice
Contact your healthcare professional if you have:
- Persistent or troublesome side effects
- A very slow heartbeat
- Fainting or severe dizziness
- New or worsening shortness of breath
- Swelling of the legs or sudden weight gain
- Chest pain that is new or worsening
Important
- Do not stop metoprolol suddenly. Abruptly stopping it can worsen chest pain, trigger abnormal heart rhythms, or increase the risk of a heart attack. If it needs to be discontinued, your healthcare professional will usually recommend reducing the dose gradually.
Many people take metoprolol safely for years. If you think you’re experiencing side effects, discuss them with your healthcare professional rather than stopping the medication on your own.
