How to Make Your Spider Plant Bloom Quickly and Make Your Home Scented

Posted on July 21, 2026 by Admin

The headline is misleading. Spider plants are not grown for their fragrance, and their flowers have little to no noticeable scent. If someone claims a spider plant will perfume your home, that’s not typical.

If you want to encourage a spider plant to flower, here’s what actually helps:

  • Provide bright, indirect light. Too little light is one of the main reasons spider plants don’t flower.
  • Avoid overpotting. Spider plants often bloom better when they’re slightly root-bound.
  • Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry. Don’t let the soil stay soggy.
  • Fertilize lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer every 4–6 weeks. Too much fertilizer can encourage leaves instead of flowers.
  • Keep temperatures moderate, ideally around 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Be patient. Mature, healthy plants are more likely to produce small white flowers and baby plantlets.

If your goal is a fragrant houseplant, consider plants that are actually known for their scent, such as:

  • Jasmine
  • Gardenia
  • Lavender (if you have enough light)
  • Scented geraniums

So while you can encourage a spider plant to bloom, you shouldn’t expect it to make your home smell fragrant. Its appeal is its attractive foliage, ease of care, and ability to produce cascading baby plants.
