If you mean “People with this ear hole have…”, you may be referring to the small extra opening some people have near the front of their ear. This is called a preauricular pit (or preauricular sinus).
What it means
- It is a small congenital opening that forms before birth.
- It is relatively common and is usually harmless.
- Many people have one and never experience any problems.
Possible issues
Sometimes a preauricular pit can:
- Become infected
- Swell, become painful, or drain fluid
- Develop a small cyst or abscess
When to get it checked
Seek medical advice if the area becomes:
- Red, swollen, or painful
- Warm to the touch
- Leaking pus or foul-smelling fluid
- Repeatedly infected
Having a preauricular pit does not automatically mean someone has a health problem. In most cases, it is simply a harmless difference in ear development. If you mean a different type of “ear hole,” describe where it is located or share a photo, and I can help identify it.
