A bug with a pincer-like pair of “forceps” on its rear end that suddenly runs out from under a blanket is most likely an earwig. They look scary, but they are generally not dangerous to people or pets.
Will it pinch you?
- Earwigs can use their rear pincers (cerci) to grab things, but they rarely pinch humans.
- They do not hunt people, bite for blood, sting, or inject venom.
- If handled roughly, one might give a small pinch, but it is usually harmless.
Can it hurt your pets?
- Earwigs are not poisonous and are not known to harm dogs or cats.
- A pet that eats one may occasionally have mild stomach upset, but serious problems are unlikely.
Why was it hiding in your blanket?
Earwigs prefer:
- Dark, sheltered places
- Moist areas
- Cool hiding spots during the day
They may wander indoors from gardens, cracks, windows, or outdoor items.
What to do:
- Remove it with a tissue, cup, or vacuum rather than handling it.
- Wash or shake out bedding if it makes you more comfortable.
- Reduce damp areas and seal small entry points around doors and windows.
If it didn’t have pincers at the very back, or if you can describe its color, size, number of legs, and shape, it may be a different insect and I can help identify it.
