If you find a silverfish in your home, it usually means they have found a place with conditions they like—it is not a sign of something mysterious or a guaranteed infestation.
Silverfish are small, wingless insects that prefer:
- Moisture and humidity (bathrooms, basements, kitchens, laundry areas)
- Dark hiding places (cracks, closets, behind furniture)
- Food sources such as paper, cardboard, glue, book bindings, and starchy materials
What you should do if you see silverfish
- Reduce humidity
- Use a fan, ventilation, or a dehumidifier in damp areas.
- Fix leaks and dry wet areas.
- Remove hiding places
- Reduce piles of cardboard, old papers, and clutter.
- Seal cracks around baseboards and walls.
- Store food properly
- Keep dry goods (flour, cereal, pet food) in sealed containers.
- Clean regularly
- Vacuum corners, closets, and areas behind furniture.
- Use traps or pest control if needed
- Sticky traps can help monitor activity.
- Persistent problems may require professional treatment.
Seeing one or two silverfish does not always mean you have a major problem, but repeated sightings—especially at night—can be a sign that moisture or entry points need attention.
