Aneurysm: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
An aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel that bulges outward. Some aneurysms cause no symptoms and are found during tests for other reasons, but if one grows or ruptures, it can become life-threatening.
Possible warning signs depend on where the aneurysm is located:
1. Sudden, severe headache
- A sudden “worst headache of your life” may be a warning sign of a brain aneurysm rupture.
- It may occur with nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, confusion, or loss of consciousness.
2. Vision changes
- Blurred vision, double vision, or drooping eyelids can occur with some brain aneurysms.
3. Weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking
- Sudden neurological symptoms may indicate bleeding in the brain and require emergency care.
4. Chest or upper back pain
- Aneurysms involving the aorta (the body’s main artery) may cause severe chest or back pain.
5. A pulsating feeling in the abdomen
- Some abdominal aortic aneurysms may feel like a strong pulse or a lump in the belly.
6. Deep abdominal or back pain
- Persistent or sudden severe pain may be a warning sign.
7. Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- A large aneurysm may press on nearby structures.
8. Sudden collapse or fainting
- This can occur if an aneurysm ruptures and causes major internal bleeding.
Emergency signs — seek immediate medical help:
- Sudden severe headache
- Sudden chest, abdominal, or back pain
- Fainting or collapse
- New weakness, numbness, confusion, or trouble speaking
- Difficulty breathing
Risk factors for aneurysms include:
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- Older age
- Family history of aneurysms
- Certain genetic conditions
- Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
Reducing risk:
