Double the Blooms: How to Help Your Christmas Cactus Thrive Year-Round
A Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) can bloom beautifully for many years when it gets the right balance of light, water, temperature, and rest. While there is no guaranteed trick to “double” blooms overnight, these care steps can encourage more flowers and healthier growth.
1. Provide bright, indirect light
- Place your Christmas cactus near a bright window with filtered light.
- Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may reduce flowering.
2. Water correctly
- Unlike desert cacti, Christmas cactus is a tropical plant and prefers more moisture.
- Water when the top layer of soil feels dry.
- Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy, as this can cause root rot.
3. Use well-draining soil
A good mix can include:
- Regular potting soil
- Perlite for drainage
- Orchid bark or similar material for airflow around roots
4. Feed during the growing season
- Fertilize lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
