FIBROMYALGIA: The Disease of Unexpressed Emotions

Fibromyalgia: Understanding the Condition Beyond the “Unexpressed Emotions” Claim

Fibromyalgia is a real and complex medical condition characterized mainly by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and sensitivity to touch. It is sometimes described online as “the disease of unexpressed emotions,” but this phrase is not a medical diagnosis and does not mean that emotions alone cause fibromyalgia.

Research suggests fibromyalgia involves a combination of factors, including:

  1. Changes in pain processing
    • The nervous system may become more sensitive, causing normal sensations to be interpreted as painful (sometimes called central sensitization).
  2. Sleep disturbances
    • Poor-quality sleep can worsen pain, fatigue, and concentration difficulties.
  3. Stress and emotional health
    • Stress, anxiety, or past difficult experiences can influence how the body processes pain and can affect symptom severity, but they are not the sole cause of fibromyalgia.
  4. Genetic and biological factors
    • Some people may have a higher susceptibility due to genetics or differences in how their bodies regulate pain signals.

Common symptoms include:

  • Widespread muscle and joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • “Brain fog” (difficulty concentrating or remembering)
  • Headaches
  • Increased sensitivity to pressure, temperature, or sound

What can help:

  • Regular, gentle exercise (such as walking, swimming, or stretching)
  • Consistent sleep habits
  • Stress-management techniques
  • Physical therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy or other psychological support when helpful
  • Medications prescribed by a healthcare professional for specific symptoms

Fibromyalgia is best understood as a multifactorial condition involving the nervous system, body processes, and life factors—not simply as a result of emotions. If you suspect you may have fibromyalgia, a healthcare professional can help evaluate symptoms and rule out other causes.
