How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Leave Them White and Fresh-Smelling
Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. A proper wash can help refresh them and make them look cleaner again.
What you’ll need
- Mild laundry detergent
- Baking soda (optional)
- White vinegar (optional)
- Warm water
- Dryer or a well-ventilated area for drying
Steps to clean your pillows
1. Check the care label
Before washing, check whether your pillow is machine washable. Memory foam and some specialty pillows usually need different cleaning methods.
2. Remove the pillowcase and cover
Wash pillowcases and protectors separately according to their care instructions.
3. Wash washable pillows
- Use a gentle cycle with warm water if allowed.
- Avoid using too much detergent, which can leave residue.
- If your machine allows it, run an extra rinse cycle.
4. Help remove odors
Adding a small amount of baking soda during washing may help neutralize smells. Some people also use white vinegar in the rinse compartment, but avoid mixing vinegar with bleach.
5. Dry completely
Dry pillows thoroughly to prevent moisture buildup.
- Use a low or medium heat setting if permitted.
- Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff them.
- Make sure the inside is completely dry before using.
Keep pillows fresher longer
- Use washable pillow protectors.
- Wash bedding regularly.
- Air pillows out occasionally.
- Replace pillows when they no longer support your head and neck or cannot be cleaned effectively.
A clean pillow is not just about appearance—it can also help reduce trapped odors and buildup from everyday use.
