If You Think You’re Having a Heart Attack at Home: What to Do Immediately

A heart attack is a medical emergency. There is no guaranteed 10-second trick that can stop a heart attack, but taking the right actions quickly can improve your chances of survival.

1. Call emergency services immediately

  • Call your local emergency number (for example, 112/911 depending on your location).
  • Do not try to drive yourself to the hospital.

2. Sit down and stay as calm as possible

  • Stop activity.
  • Sit upright or in a comfortable position.
  • Loosen tight clothing.

3. Take aspirin only if appropriate

  • If emergency operators or a healthcare professional advise it, and you are not allergic, not on a doctor’s restriction against aspirin, and not having signs of serious bleeding, chewing an aspirin may be recommended in some situations.
  • Do not delay calling emergency services to take medication.

4. If you are alone

  • Unlock the door if you can.
  • Keep your phone nearby.
  • Alert someone nearby if possible.

Warning signs of a heart attack can include:

  • Chest pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain
  • Pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sudden weakness or lightheadedness

Some people—especially older adults and people with diabetes—may have less typical symptoms, such as unusual fatigue, indigestion-like discomfort, or shortness of breath.

If someone else collapses:

  • Call emergency services.
  • Start CPR if they are not breathing normally.
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available.

Bottom line: The most important “first step” is getting emergency help immediately. Fast treatment can save heart muscle and lives.
