Five Drinks That May Be Less Healthy for Your Bones
No single drink “destroys” bones on its own. Bone health depends on many factors, including calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, medications, and overall diet. However, some beverages may contribute to poorer bone health if consumed in excess.
1. Sugary soft drinks
- Drinking large amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages may be associated with poorer overall diet quality and lower intake of calcium-rich foods.
2. Excessive alcohol
- Heavy, long-term alcohol use can interfere with bone formation and increase the risk of fractures.
3. Highly caffeinated drinks
- Very high caffeine intake may slightly increase calcium loss in urine, but for most people with adequate calcium intake, moderate coffee or tea consumption is not considered harmful to bone health.
4. Sugary energy drinks
- These often contain high amounts of sugar and caffeine. Regular, excessive consumption may negatively affect overall health.
5. Specialty coffee drinks high in sugar
- Sweetened coffee beverages can contain large amounts of added sugar and calories. The sugar is a greater concern than the coffee itself.
What supports healthy bones?
- Eat enough calcium (from dairy products, fortified foods, or other calcium-rich sources).
- Get enough vitamin D.
- Do weight-bearing and resistance exercise (such as walking, dancing, or strength training).
- Avoid smoking.
- Limit excessive alcohol consumption.
The biggest contributors to strong bones are consistent healthy habits over time, not simply avoiding a particular drink. Moderate coffee or tea is generally compatible with good bone health for most adults when combined with an overall balanced diet.
