This is how to have geraniums full of flowers: you have to water them like this to keep them always leafy.

If you want geraniums (Pelargonium) to produce lots of flowers and healthy foliage, how you water them matters—but there’s no single “secret” watering method.

Here are the practices that are most likely to keep them thriving:

  • Water deeply, then let the soil partially dry before watering again. Geraniums prefer evenly moist soil but do not tolerate constantly wet roots.
  • Water at the base of the plant rather than wetting the leaves, which can help reduce fungal diseases.
  • Check the soil first. Water when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) feels dry to the touch.
  • Use well-draining soil and pots with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  • Water more often during hot, dry weather and less during cool or rainy periods.

To encourage more blooms:

  • Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.
  • Remove spent flowers (“deadhead”) to encourage new blooms.
  • Feed with a balanced or bloom-supporting fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season, following the product directions.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

If your geraniums are healthy but not flowering well, the most common reasons are insufficient sunlight, overwatering, or too much nitrogen fertilizer rather than the way they’re watered. Proper light, watering, and routine care together are the best recipe for abundant blooms.
