Urologist W.arns: DRINK WATER LIKE THIS to Stop Getting Up to Go to the Bathroom at Night Secrets Seniors Wish They Knew Sooner!

Posted on July 14, 2026 by Admin

Headlines like “Drink water like this to stop getting up to go to the bathroom at night” are usually exaggerated. There isn’t a special way to drink water that reliably prevents nighttime urination (nocturia).

If you’re waking up to urinate, these strategies may help:

  • Stay hydrated during the day instead of drinking most of your fluids in the evening.
  • Reduce fluid intake 2–4 hours before bedtime, unless your healthcare provider has told you to drink more.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol in the evening, as they can increase urine production or irritate the bladder.
  • Empty your bladder just before going to bed.
  • If you have swollen legs, elevating them for an hour or two before bed or wearing compression stockings (if appropriate for you) may help shift fluid earlier in the day.

Common causes of nighttime urination

Nocturia can result from many conditions, including:

  • Drinking large amounts of fluid in the evening
  • An overactive bladder
  • Urinary tract infection
  • An enlarged prostate (in many older men)
  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications, such as diuretics (“water pills”)
  • Sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea
  • Heart or kidney conditions

When to see a healthcare professional

You should seek medical advice if:

  • You regularly wake two or more times a night to urinate and it’s affecting your sleep.
  • You have pain or burning with urination, blood in your urine, fever, or difficulty urinating.
  • You notice excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, leg swelling, or new symptoms.

While adjusting when you drink fluids can help some people, there is no evidence that a specific “water-drinking trick” can cure nocturia. The most effective treatment depends on identifying and addressing the underlying cause.

If you tell me:

  • your age,
  • whether you’re male or female,
  • how many times you wake up to urinate, and
  • whether you have diabetes, prostate problems, or take diuretics,

I can help explain the most likely causes and what options might be appropriate.
