We’re renting a house, and we can’t figure out what this weird shelf next to the kitchen island is for. No one seems to know. Any ideas? It’s driving us crazy!

A photo would help a lot—there are many odd-looking built-ins next to kitchen islands, and the purpose depends on the shape and height.

If you can upload a picture, I can help identify it. In the meantime, some common possibilities are:

  • Cookbook shelf – a narrow open shelf near the island is often meant for cookbooks or recipe binders.
  • Spice or oil storage – if it’s shallow and close to the cooking area, it may be for frequently used ingredients.
  • Wine bottle rack – small cubby-style shelves are sometimes built for bottles.
  • Microwave/appliance nook – deeper shelves may have been designed for small appliances.
  • Display shelf – some kitchens include decorative shelving for plants, bowls, or pottery.
  • Mail/drop zone – in some homes, a small shelf near the kitchen becomes a place for keys, papers, and daily items.
  • Seating support or old design feature – some islands have unusual side shelving from a previous renovation.

A few details that would help:

  • How high is the shelf from the floor?
  • How deep is it?
  • Is it open on the sides or enclosed?
  • Are there multiple shelves/cubbies?
  • Does it have any outlets nearby?

Upload a photo and I’ll take a closer look.
